Childrens Prescription Frames
If the time comes when a child needs to wear glasses, this need not to be seen as a disadvantage. The wide choice of spectacle frames now available for children are comfortable and practical, as well as cool and trendy. Several celebrities such as Tinie Tempah, wear glasses without prescription lenses, simply because they think they look cool. Spectacle frames for children are well designed and attractive, with features such as adjustable nose pads and saddle bridges for small, unformed noses, and spring hinges for durability and comfort. Plastic lenses are supplied to children, being far lighter and safer than glass, and these can be treated with anti-scratch finishes for durability.
Under the NHS an eye examination is available without charge for all children up to the age of 16, and 19 if they are in full-time education. As an indication of the importance of children's sight care, only a qualified optometrist or dispensing optician registered with the General Optical Council, or a registered medical practitioner, is permitted by law to supply children's spectacles.
Following an eye examination, parents are entitled to a voucher towards the cost of any glasses or contact lenses prescribed. The value of the voucher will be determined by the prescription required by the child. The Big Optician offers a range of good quality frames for children and young people that are entirely free with their voucher.

Ray Ban
The Big Optician Newcastle is one of Newcastles main RayBan stockist. Both Big Optician Newcastle stores have a large selection of RayBan sunglasses and spectacle frames in stock.
Ray Ban was founded in 1937 after Lieutenant John McCready returned from a balloon flying mission in the 1920's and complained that the sun had permanently damaged his eyes. He wanted to create a type of sunglasses that would not only provide superb protection from the sun but also look elegant and stylish.
Ray Ban's were later introduced into the USA Army Air Corps, where their pilots immediately adopted the sunglasses and they became an essential part of standard issue kit.
RayBan sunglasses are one of the most recognised sunglass brands in the world. It is the fastest selling sunglass brand at The Big Optician Newcastle.
Hundreds of pairs of Ray Bans have made appearances in Hollywood films, the first dates back to the 1961 movie, Breakfast At Tiffany's starring Audrey Hepburn. Ray Ban have also featured in the films: Top Gun; The Blue Brothers; Risky Business; Reservoir Dogs; Men In Black, amongst a multitude of others. Check out the must-see Ray Ban 5 minute movie on Youtube.
Ray Ban remains a favourite amongst world leaders and celebrities. U.S. President Barack Obama has been repeatedly photographed wearing his Ray Ban shades. Most recently President Obama was seen during his Christmas 2009 family holiday in Hawaii wearing his Ray Ban Olympian 11 Deluxe sunglasses.
Pixie Lott was pictured enjoying the LA sunshine in January 2010. Pixie was wearing a fantastic pair of Ray Ban Wayfarer Rare Prints 2140 in Yellow, whilst Elin Nordegren was seen also in January spending some family time with hubby Tiger Woods and kids in Windermere, Florida. Erin who was looking as elegant as ever, despite the recent domestic turmoil, was wearing a pair of over sized Ray Ban CATS 5000 model 4125 in stylish black.
Simon Cowell and Russell Brand have both been spotted in LA during December wearing their Ray Bans. Simon was later pictured in the not so sunny Newcastle upon Tyne in January 2010 still wearing his Rayban aviators. Incidentally, like Erin, Russell was also wearing Ray Ban CATS 5000 (photographed as he was leaving Hollywood's Viper Room recently) proving Ray Ban is a truly unisex brand.
Ray Ban is popular on both sides of the Atlantic and with A Listers of all ages. Lady GaGa and Fearne Cotton were both photographed in London during December 2009 wearing the New Clubmaster RB2186 in Red Havana.
Keith Little owner of The Big Optician Newcastle said 'Wearing sunglasses is not only about looking good it is also a key way of protecting your eyes from damaging UV light. Anyone with children needs to have UV eye protection for their kids front of mind. RayBan design some of the coolest sunglasses on the market, and with their RayBan Juniors, they have combined their up to the minute eye for what is cool, with 100% UV protection for children. If you want to ensure your childs eyes have optimum protection against the sun, whilst still retaining their unique sense of fashion, then a pair of RayBan Juniors fits the bill'

Lindberg Kids Frames
The Big Optician is one of the only stockists of Lindberg frames in the North East and we guarantee you the best pricing.
It was not until the beginning of the 1980's when the Danish optometrist Poul-Jorn Lindberg started needing spectacles himself that he really became aware of what it is like to wear spectacles. His views were clear: A spectacle frame is like a scaffold which one wears on one's face – heavy, stiff and uncomfortable. Rather than trying to find faces to suit these scaffolds, why not make the scaffolds to suit the faces? He started working with the architect Hans Dissing and together they conceived a different frame-building system: Air Titanium. With Air Titanium and the ensuing frame concepts LINDBERG has revolutionised the international market for eyewear, has been awarded a large number of the most prestigious design prizes in the world and has made life easier and more beautiful for spectacle wearers – worldwide.
Each Lindberg frame is handcrafted exclusively for the wearer and with frames weighing as little as 1.9 grams Lindberg eyewear is of the most lightweight in the world. The frames are of beautiful, minimalistic designs without screws, rivets and welds. Lindberg’s patented and prize-winning frame building system has made it possible to create a unique and personal frame for every individual – perfect in shape, colour and size.
Staff at The Big Optician are Lindberg-trained and will be happy to talk to you in more detail and demonstrate the benefits of Lindberg frames when you call into the practices. We have a fantastic range for children.
