Dolce & Gabbana Sicilian Carretto
The chivalrous scenes and vivid colors adorning the traditional Sicilian cart or ‘carretto’ provide both the inspiration and decorative techniques for an outstanding eyewear collection – a homage to Sicily and its exquisite crafts
The exploits of cavaliers and deeds of medieval knights and ladies performed in marionette theatres are also painted onto traditional Sicilian carts, a symbol of Sicily’s artistic craftsmanship made world famous for its dazzling colors and intricate decorations.
This emblem of Sicily, the spiritual home and perennial source of inspiration for Dolce&Gabbana, lies at the heart of the Sicilian Carretto Eyewear Collection, a tribute to a marvel of craftsmanship. As well as the colors and motifs, the collection also features the same decorative techniques used by the master craftsmen who once worked with the carts.
Available in a numbered, limited edition of 100, the eyewear is crafted from Canaletto walnut with a painted relief design on the front of the frames. The colors are applied by hand in meticulous order, almost like a ritual: first come the red with yellow motifs, then blue, green and orange. No two pairs are the same, since the decorator’s hand renders each model completely unique.
Finishing off the exclusive range are gray gradient lenses and the Dolce&Gabbana logo engraved on the inner temple. Even the packaging is special: the cases are entirely made from fabric with the Carretto print.
The Sicilian Carretto collection also includes other sunglasses and optical glasses.
